This coffee comes from Tinganga Estate in Kiambu County, Kenya, where high altitude, rich volcanic soils and a long-established estate system combine to produce a particularly distinctive expression of Kenyan Arabica.
Unlike the fully washed coffees for which Kenya is best known, this lot is processed as a natural, with the whole coffee cherry dried around the seed. The result is a sweeter, fuller and more fruit-driven cup, while still retaining the structure and clarity associated with high-grown Kenyan coffee.
Tinganga Estate
Tinganga is a large, established coffee estate in Kiambu County, just north of Nairobi.
The estate covers around 182 hectares and is operated by Sasini PLC, one of Kenya’s long-standing agricultural businesses.
Coffee has been grown in this part of Kenya for generations, and the region is particularly well suited to Arabica thanks to its elevation, equatorial climate and deep red volcanic soils.
High-Altitude SL34
This lot is produced entirely from SL34, one of Kenya’s most famous Arabica varieties.
SL34 is closely associated with the development of high-quality Kenyan coffee and is known for its ability to produce excellent sweetness, structure and fruit complexity when grown at altitude.
This coffee is grown at around 1,950 metres above sea level, where cooler temperatures slow cherry development and allow the fruit to ripen more gradually.
That slower maturation contributes to greater bean density and flavour development before harvest.
A Rare Kenyan Natural
What makes this lot particularly unusual is its processing method.
Kenya’s specialty coffee reputation has traditionally been built on fully washed coffees, so naturally processed Kenyan lots are still relatively uncommon.
At Tinganga, ripe cherries are dried whole on raised African beds, allowing the fruit to remain around the coffee seed throughout the drying process.
The cherries can remain on the beds for up to six weeks, during which they are regularly turned and carefully monitored.
They are also covered at night and during periods of rain to help control moisture and encourage even drying.
Why Natural Processing Matters
Leaving the fruit around the seed for such a long period has a significant effect on the final flavour.
Compared with a washed coffee, natural processing generally produces a fuller body, heavier sweetness and more intense fruit character.
In this lot, that translates into a profile of:
Strawberry Jam • Plum • Toffee
The strawberry jam brings ripe red-fruit sweetness, while plum adds a deeper stone-fruit character.
A soft toffee note rounds out the cup with caramelised sweetness and a smoother finish.
Red Volcanic Soils
Tinganga sits within one of Kenya’s classic coffee-growing landscapes, with soils described as red, volcanic and sandy.
These soils are well drained and rich in minerals, while the high elevation helps moderate daytime heat.
Together, these conditions create an environment well suited to producing dense, high-quality Arabica.
Single-Estate Traceability
Unlike many Kenyan coffees that are built from multiple smallholder contributions, this is a single-estate lot.
That gives the coffee a much clearer connection to one farm, one growing environment and one production system.
For roasters, this makes it especially interesting as a way to explore the character of one specific Kenyan estate rather than a broader regional blend.
Worker & Community Programmes
Tinganga forms part of a wider estate system with established worker and community programmes.
Estate employees can benefit from measures including housing, access to early childhood education and organised worker representation.
The wider business has also supported local education initiatives, including investment in digital facilities for nearby schools.
These programmes form part of the social framework surrounding the estate rather than being separate from its coffee production.
In the Cup
This coffee offers a very different interpretation of Kenyan specialty coffee.
Rather than being dominated by sharp citrus or tea-like acidity, the cup is richer, sweeter and more fruit-led.
Expect:
Strawberry Jam • Plum • Toffee
The overall profile is juicy, rounded and expressive, with a clear natural-process character but enough structure to keep the cup balanced.
For Roasters
This coffee should respond especially well to light-to-medium roast profiles.
A lighter development will preserve more of the strawberry and plum character.
A medium roast will deepen the toffee sweetness and increase body while keeping the fruit clearly present.
It should work particularly well for filter, V60, AeroPress and single-origin espresso.
A Distinctive Kenyan Coffee
Kenya Tinganga Estate Natural stands out because it combines:
Single-estate traceability, 100% SL34, very high-altitude production and slow natural processing.
That makes it a particularly compelling option for roasters looking for a Kenyan coffee with a sweeter, more modern and fruit-driven profile.
